Question : What is ESI Scheme?
Answer : Employees’ State Insurance Scheme of India is a multi-dimensional Social Security Scheme tailored to provide Socio-economic protection to the 'employees' in the organized sector against the events of sickness, maternity, disablement and death due to employment injury and to provide medical care to the insured employees and their families.
Question : Who must register with ESI Scheme?
Answer : Any entity it may be a government office, public sector or private sector entity which has 10 or more employees needs to get registered under the ESI Scheme
Question : Which Entities Covered Under ESIC?
Answer : 1.Shops.
2.Restaurants or hotels engaged only in sales.

Question : What are the benefits of ESIC Registration?
Answer : The benefits of registering under this scheme are varied. Some of them are:
1.Sickness benefits at the rate of 70% (in the form of salary), in case of any certified illness and which lasts for a maximum of 91 days in any year.
2.Medical benefits to an employee and his family members.
3.Maternity benefit to the women who are pregnant (paid leaves).
4.If the death of the employee happens while on work – 90% of the salary is given to his dependents in the form of a monthly payment after the death of the employee.
5.Same as above in case of disability of the employee.
6.Funeral expenses.
7.Old age medical care expenses.
Question : How does the scheme help the employees?
Answer : The scheme provides full medical care to the employee registered under the ESI Act, 1948 during the period of his incapacity, restoration of his health and working capacity. The scheme also provides medical care to their family members also.
Question : Who administers the ESI Scheme?
Answer : The ESI Scheme is administered by a statutory corporate body called the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), which has members representing Employers, Employees, the Central Government, State Government, Medical Profession and the Hon’ble Members of Parliament.
Director General is the Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation and is also an ex-officio member of the Corporation.
Question : Is it mandatory for the Employer to register under the scheme?
Answer : Yes, it is the statutory responsibility of the employer to register their Factory/ Establishment under the ESI Act within 15 days from the date of its applicability to them
Question : What is a ESI Code number?
Answer : It is a 17 digit unique identification number allotted to each of the factory/establishment registered under the provisions of the Act.
Such a number is generated through ESIC portal on submission of the required information by the employer.
